Express Yourself

In a blatant attempt to primarily gain more readership and meet more writerly folk, I have decided to get into a new weekly meme called Express Yourself. There will be a different subject every week until the weekend of Halloween when the Spooktoberfest blogfest will be taking place. It sounds like a bit of fun and a great way to meet other bloggers.

Two nice ladies are running the meme together the first I heard of was Dani who has a blog called Entertaining Intrests and the other is Jackie who has a blog called Bouquet of Books. Anyone can sign up for it (they let me in and both followed my blog back in return) and basically you answer one of the questions per week. Simple eh?

Now, the question for this week is "Pick a name in your current WIP (I'm hoping that means work in progress); what was your process of acquiring it?

This is an interesting question for me as I don't have a method per se. A good friend of mine that writes as well just gave me some straight advice on the subject of names. He said that when thinking of names for characters, just ensure that they are memorable and for leading ones, short is better. So, with this in mind I started to write my current and only WIP; Reunion.

As you will be able to see on the Reunion page I have on my blog, the WIP is written in parts and I have had the idea for it for a very long time. When I sat down to write Part One, my primary objective was to just tell a story about a man called David who had a story in his past that was coming back to be concluded. I thought that the first scene would be at a breakfast table in a family house with an invitation to a school reunion. As I wrote I realised I needed to write a family and then they would need names and a personality of their own which in turn would give David some character too. If I'm honest, the last name of Brook came later, almost as an afterthought.

I really do wish that there was more to the story behind David Brook, but sadly there isn't! Sorry about that.. Hopefully the other posts will be more interesting.

Rock on,

W.

  1. I always hate that, "Crap, I just made a new character and now I have to name them" moment.

Oh, and WIP is in fact Work in Progress :)

  5. Signing up for blogfests, bloghops & memes are the best way to meet new bloggers. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

With regards to characters' names, I struggle to find suitable names and that's why my characters remain Mr.A or Mrs.B or Ms.XYZ until the name materializes from somewhere...
Very interesting meme... I must check it out.

  6. Coming up with strong, unusual and awesome names is one of the favorite parts of the writing process! When a name hits me as easy as yours, it's just fabulous. It doesn't matter whether the name comes through flashing lights and visions, or they silently filter in with a fresh breeze. What matters is we create a character we can't for others to read about!
New follower, stopping by to say hi and nice to meet you:)
