O is for Omar

The next couple are going to be short ones as I have a sizeable assignment to complete for Thursday for a course I am being forced to do taking at work. So, I have decided to some music related posts for O, P and Q. Please don't think me lazy, I just got to take care of business...

Now, back in the day (and when I say day, I mean the mid to late eighties) music was having an identity crisis. Gone were the days of 70's rock and disco. Gone were the massive acts of pop and the 80's ushered in the new ska of Madness and the Specials, new romantics Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet*, the new wave of british heavy metal, or NWOBHM with Saxon, Def Leppard and Iron Maiden. Everything was new as the '80's tried it's damnedest to slough off the beige skin of the seventies and show it's new, neon shininess. Haircuts were quite frankly ridiculous (I know, I had one), Tshirts were sold by a man called Frankie and he wanted you to RELAX apparently. It was boisterous and annoying at the best of times, like a four year old that wouldn't go to bed when he was told.

But, some music was very, very, good. Shining like tiny diamonds in the garish rough, came unsung heroes of the time and I am showing you one that with the first note transports me back twenty. Omar was and still is an obscure jazz artist, but with There's Nothing Like This gained a one hit wonder that really doesn't date in my opinion. Have a listen. Get your significant other over, add mood lighting and a couple of glasses of good red wine. Sex-ay times are ahead my friends. No, you don't need to thank me.

Rocco's Random Number is 556 which takes you to Rebeccah Writes. I have been following her for a while and she has all kinds of good writerly stuff on her site. Go on over!

Rock on.

* I only recently found out what Spandau Ballet means. It's not very nice.

  3. I enjoyed your run-down of music through several decades. I started loving pop songs from the first Bill Hayley and the Commets rock 'n roll.

  4. Good luck with the assignment. Listened to the song and I haven't heard it before, but it is lovely and mellow. The mid to late 80s was my era of music :).
